Our video discussed the issues of red tide, biomagnification, trophic level interactions, and human impact on the environment. Eutrophication is the enrichment of nitrogen and phosphorus in fresh and salt water ecosystems. It is caused by human impact, most commonly through agricultural use of fertilizers. Protists such as Dinoflagellates, which are toxic, thrive off of nitrogen, and the increase in the nutrient produces an increase in the species. Mussels and other species which eat Dinoflagellates become toxic through biomagnification—the increased concentration of toxins when moving up the food chain. Humans that eat these mussels will succumb to the toxic effects. This interaction between humans and the environment is a prime example of how humans alter ecosystem health through certain activities.
